2016-0615-Barred Owl

06152016-BAOW We always try and put babies back with their mothers, but when they are in danger it is not often possible.  This little Barred Owl was in a neighborhood and dogs were the problem.  The people who found it transported it to the zoo, who usually does not take in native wildlife.  But the zoo kindly rehydrated the little guy and contacted Soarin' Hawk.   Upon examination, he was bright and alert and a decent weight. He ate very little the first night but ate very well the second day.  He will soon be put in a flight pen with other baby barred owls. 28June He is eating well on his own.  He is much younger and smaller than our other orphaned Barred Owls, so we decided to have Peabody foster him for awhile.  He will be put with the other orphans in a couple weeks. 24 Aug 06152016-BAOW. This is the youngest of the Barred Owl orphans this year.  While the others are being conditioned for release, this guy hasn't been flying well.  So we will rest him a bit longer and try again later.
