20190731-Red-tailed Hawk - 1

Via volunteer Jillian: On Wednesday, July 31, a red-tailed hawk was rescued at the Fort Wayne Country Club.  It had been on the ground for several days.  He appeared unable to fly and was taken to our ICU.  There appears to be no external injuries.  A small amount of blood was found in its mouth with no apparent source.  An exam  by our veterinarian will determine what injuries there are, if they can be treated, and we can release it back at the Country Club 08/01/19 This bird has been examined by our veterinarian. No significant findings on its xrays. It was dehydrated when it came to our treatment facility. It is being given subcutaneous fluids and being held for observations. 08/03/19 This hawk was given solid food for the first time. He did not eat on his own.  Hopefully he will start eating on his own so we don't have to start oral feedings again 08/10/19 This hawk has thankfully started eating on its own. He is in our treatment facility still receiving medication for pain and an antibiotic 08/18/2019 This bird injured his wing while in its cage. It has been treated with a topical  antibiotic and oral medication for pain. It is healing well 08/25/19 This hawk has recovered enough to be moved to our rehabilitation facility. He will eventually be started on creance flight training, which is allowing him to fly while tethered . This helps us determine his ability to eventually be released 09/15/19 This hawk's creance training is going well. 10/01/19 – This bird’s wing has healed, and he flies well. He still has a wound on his foot, so we are holding him until the wound heals. Then he will be ready for release!
