Leo

Long-eared owls winter in Indiana and fly further north for the summer.  A gentleman in Huntertown, Indiana, enjoys watching a flock of long-ears that returns to his woods each winter.  Early in 2012, he noticed one of “his” long-eared owls on the ground and called Soarin’Hawk. Leo, as he is now called, had a wrist injury. No broken bones were found on radiographs. The ligaments and tendons in his wrist were torn and never healed enough for him to regain his ability to fly.  Leo is one of our most expressive education birds.  He always looks like he is surprised!  Long-eared owls are, by their nature, a nervous bird.  Leo enjoys being at quiet venues for education programs, but the noisy ones can make him a bit jumpy. Unfortunately we lost Leo to a severe infection in 2014.  We miss his cute face dearly.
