History

On the evening of October 16, there was a post on my town’s Facebook page asking for help with a red-tailed hawk that had been on the side of the road for a few hours. A few people tagged me on the post, so I contacted the original poster and found out some details. A few of the neighbors also gave me some info and said they could help locate the bird.

The bird was just a few minutes from my home, so I drove over and found people offering to help.  They held some lights so I could see what I was doing.   The bird was easy to pick up.  I could tell she had some serious head damage and was hit by a car.

The next morning, I brought the bird into our ICU, thoroughly checked her out, and took X-rays. She had a good weight and keel score. She has a beautiful red tail, so we know she’s an adult.

Our vet examined her X-rays and found a fracture to the orbital ridge above the eye. Once the swelling is gone, the bird’s vision will be checked.

The hawk has been getting eye meds, pain meds and is being hand fed for now.
