20200414-Great Horned Owl-1

Phew, what a day.  Lynne called Monday evening and said some folks in New Haven had found two Great Horned Owlets.  They had gone back later that evening and only one remained.  Lynne asked if we would go down on Tuesday morning to pick it up.  Suz and I went down this morning and met the kids who found the bird.  We traversed thru a very wooded area, ravines, water and heavy ground cover.  We could not locate the bird or its sibling nor could we find the nest or any sign of the parents. We did a thorough search and left.  We indicated that if the bird was found to call Lynne back.   Several hours later on Tuesday, Lynnne called back and indicated that some kids had found the owlet, contacted the folks that called us to come pick it up.  Suz and I went back to New Haven, met the callers and they had the one owlet in a box.  We took the owlet back to Pine Valley Vet Clinic to be examined by Dr. Pat.  We waited and were told the bird was fine and we should take it to ICU.  It will be held there until another raptor center with a GHOW can be found to help foster this owlet.   As always we hope and pray for all the birds we rescue.  We’ll do the same for this little guy.  Thought and prayers.   Suz Hansen and Bill Oberg 04/14/2020 After an examination and xrays by our veterinarian it was determined this was a healthy young owl. Since we were unable to find its nest and it is too young to be independent we will try and find an adult owl to foster this orphan 04/26/2020 Shortly after this owlet was rescued we rescued two more owlets from another area. They are old enough to eat on their own, it is always better to keep them with other birds of their species while they are this young. so all 3 owlets will remain together. They are currently under observation in our treatment facility . We want to make sure they gaining the appropriate amount of weight before we move them to our rehabilitation facility. Where they will stay  until they are old enough to be released 05/05/20 This owlet is still in our treatment facility, with the temperature dropping to freezing we felt it was safer to keep them inside until it warmed up a bit. This will give them time to acclimate to the weather 05/17/2020 This young owl has moved to our rehabilitation facility 06/06/2020 This owlet is acclimating to its new environment and doing well.
