20190919-Great Horned Owl-01
Got a call when I was in South bend that the Mishawaka humane society had a great horned owl for pick up. Someone found it tangled in a soccer net and took it in. I happened to be just a couple miles from there and went over. They said it didn't fly but he was strong and looked good. I took her (I say her because of her size not as big as I've seen ) to the vet and left. I hear she had an a abrasion on her foot and a bit dehydrated but will be realeased after treatment. By the way a gorgeous looking bird. 09/21/19 This owl was given a clean bill of health by our veterinarian. It has been moved to our rehabilitation facility to recover. We have attempted to creance fly it, which is when a bird is tethered and then let go, this allows us to evaluate it's ability to fly. This young owl has not done well with its training. It is possible that it has a soft tissue injury from being caught in the soccer net. This type of injury would not show up on x-rays or a physical exam. The decision was made to let it rest a few more days and then attempt to creance it again. 10/01/19 This owl's creance conditioning is still on hold. 10/15/19 This owl's status has not changed.
