20171007-Red-tailed Hawk - 1
10/07/2017 Initial exam by our avian veterinarian: This immature red-tailed hawk was quiet but alert on presentation. He was thin but not emaciated. No injuries or problems were found except flat flies, lice and mites! Radiographs did not reveal any fractures. He seems to be what we call "young and dumb." This means he was hatched this spring, separated from his parents at an appropriate age but still hadn't learned to survive on his own. He was treated for the parasites. He will be fattened up, mature some more, let to catch live prey and be released later in the fall. 10/16/2017 This red-tail is becoming feisty! Soon he will be moved from an ICU cage to a flight pen. We want him to gain more weight before he is moved outside. 11/11/2017 We believe this bird is blind in one eye. Pat is going to do an exam with an ophthalmoscope to confirm this. 12/07/2017 He is being creance flown and is doing very well! He will hopefully be released soon!
