20170614-American Kestrel

July 20, 2017 She is flying very well now!  She is in a large flight pen with lots of orphaned kestrels.  When she has had a chance to build up her endurance, she will be released. June 14, 2017 I got a call at 9:00 a.m. on June 14th to pick up a bird that was on the ground in front of the Parkview Mirro Center building.  The caller said it had been on the ground for about an hour.  When I got there, I found that it was a young female American Kestrel.  When I approached her, she ran, but could not fly.  I noticed that her right wing was drooping as she was running.  I used my net to catch her, and when I picked her up and assessed her, I did not notice any visible injuries on her.  Her weight was healthy and she was alert. I took her to Dr. Funnell, and she did not detect any obvious injuries.  She said she would take her to her office the next morning for x-rays. She was placed in Homer and Tawney's (male and female Kestrels) pen to await further assessment.
