20170521-Great Horned Owl - 1

A passerby found an injured GHO along side highway 18 in Grant County. Along comes a local Conservation Officer who stopped to offer aid. The passerby was on the phone to the local sheriff's department, and thought they'd sent someone.    Our CO was in the right place at the right time. He made contact with a Soarin' Hawk volunteer who lives nearby and dropped the bird off at their house. The bird was then transported to Soarin' Hawk for evaluation. It appears he has an eye injury and possible bone fracture in its wing. ​   05212017-GHOW Initial exam by our avian veterinarian: this mature great horned owl was very thin and lethargic.  A right eye injury is healing leaving a blood clot in the bottom of the eye, cloudiness inside the eye and scarring of the iris that leaves it unable to open completely.  Radiographs revealed a fracture of the collar bone.  His wing was wrapped to his body to allow the bone to finish healing.  He is being tube fed. His prognosis to return to the wild is guarded. 05/29/2017 He is now eating well on his own.  He was put in a small outdoor flight pen by himself.  He is very thin, so he is being fed twice the amount of food that we typically feed a great horned owl.  His wing wrap will be taken off next week.  He will begin creance flying once his weight is up.
