20170417-Eastern Screech Owl

Initial exam: no injuries or problems were found on examination by our avian veterinarian. This is just an orphaned young screech owl. This is very early in the year for a baby this age. With a mild winter some animals will lay eggs or bear young earlier in the year than they normally would. He will be kept in ICU until he is tearing up food. He is healthy and has no injuries 05/29/2017 He is doing very well tearing up whole prey and flying, so he has been placed in an outdoor flight pen with other screech owls.  Screech owls stay with their parents for 8 to 10 weeks.  He will be released at the approximate time he would leave his parents.  He will have to catch live prey before being released. 07/20/2017 This orphaned screech owl is doing great!  It shares a pen with a few more orphaned screeches.  They will all catch live prey before they are released late summer.
