20160315-Red-tailed Hawk

On 3/15/2016 Lisa called Lana telling her we had a hawk, on the ground at a home in Angola, In. Upon Lanas arrival she found a Red-tailed Hawk in the front yard. It appeared the bird did not have a desire to fly. It would hop and jump, without spreading its wings. There were no apparent injuries. The caller thought the bird may have been hit by a motorcyclist. The caller distracted the bird while Lana netted it, it could jump over three feet. The keel felt average. The bird had blood in it's mouth. Lana contained the bird in a Soarin' Hawk transport box and completed an intake card. Louie Lee met Lana at the Waterloo exit on I-69 and Louie transported the bird to Dr. Funnel lDVM. Update 03/21/2016 03152016-RTHA Unfortunately, he has a broken ulna right at the wrist.  Surgery to repair it is not an option because the fracture was so close to the joint.  We will keep his wing wrapped to his body for healing and reevaluate as it heals. Update 03/29/2016 03152016-RTHA He is doing well in a flight pen with other Red Tail Hawks.  It still remains to be seen if he will be releasable; it all depends on how the fractured ulna heals.
